现代爵士四重奏（The Modern Jazz Quartet）最初脱胎于Milt Jackson四重奏，成员包括铁琴手（vibraphone）Milt Jackson、钢琴手（piano）John Lewis、贝司（bass）Percy Heath以及鼓手（drums）Kenny Clarke。当时的四个人中，以Kenny Clarke名气最大、经验最为丰富。做为一名鼓手，Clarke与Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk,Charlie Christian等人一起被视为硬波普乐的先驱。The Modern Jazz Quartet正式成立的时间是1952年。一年之后的1953年，MJQ连续发表了《Modern Jazz Quartet with Milt Jackson》和《Modern Jazz Quartet Volume 2》两张唱片。1955年，MJQ又分别为Prestige和Savoy两家公司灌录《Concorde》和《Modern Jazz Quartet》。同年，Kenny Clarke离开乐队，鼓手的位置由Connie Kay所替代。
