Every so often a new act arrives on the scene with something fresh and invigorating to say, promoting a new set of ideals that capture the collective imagination of their rapidly expanding audience. Conceived in 2004 as a musical escape route from the clutches of conventional techno, Click Box unassumingly fall into this category and since Magda and Troy Pierce spotted their potential in 2007, inviting them to release the Espaco e tempo EP on Items & Things, they’ve fast become a permanent fixture of the Minus family. Simply speaking, São Paulo DJs & producers Marco AS and Pedro Turra have arrived in the right place at the right time with a finely crafted mixture of proto-house, electro and techno - a distinctive hybrid that’s instantly recognisable as their own. Fourteen years of involvement in the Brazilian music scene, both as performers and event organisers, have given them a unique insight into the evolution of electronic music. Together as Click Box, the potent combination of their experiences personify their vibrant live performances that have not surprisingly been drawing accolades across South America and more recently Europe and the U.K. Utilizing a mixture of synthesizers, laptops and effects, there’s something reassuringly familiar about the basslines and classic old school sequences they use to dominate the dancefloor, but it’s their innovative approach to sound design and the adrenalin rush of their arrangements that really gets the pulse racing as they join the dots between past, present and future, pushing themselves and their machines to the limit in the process.
With a wide range of influences at work, including such electro pioneers as Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and Orbital, 80s New Wave luminaries Joy Division, and Cabaret Voltaire, alongside the future funk of Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones and early Michael Jackson, Click Box possess the uncanny knack of extracting the best elements from a host of styles, melting them down into a white hot mass and then reshaping the results into dancefloor burners that pulsate with heart stopping basslines, explosive percussion and vicious synth-modulations. Perhaps that’s what gives their music its timeless, genre-defying flavour that should guarantee it’s still sounding as fresh as ever 10 years from now. Whatever the case, Click Box’s upcoming releases perfectly reflect the subtle shifts currently taking place within the scene.
But it doesn’t end there. Last year, their music went beyond the realms of dance with their track "Ash" being used in a Konica Minolta advert featuring football icon Ronaldinho. If that wasn’t enough they were also responsible for the electronic arrangements on the album "La Plata" for one of Brazil’s biggest pop/rock bands Jota Quest. Clearly, their music has the potential to reach out to a wider audience while staying true to the underground. It’s this versatility and open-mindedness that suggests the best is yet to come from the boys from Brazil.
