As if to prove that the much-fêted 'entente formidable' between Great Britain and France is rather more than a one-night stand between a dowdy local lad and a slick foreign exchange student consummating the construction of nuclear power stations, military collaboration and border controls, Britain's foremost chanteuse Sarah Nixey is releasing a sparkling new lingua franca single: Le Temps De L'Amour.
Written by Gallic genius Jacques Dutronc (amongst others) for his wife to be, the peerless �— until now, Françoise Hardy.
This trippy electropop swinger is backed by (in a digital world perhaps this should read bundled with) Ici Avec Toi: Sarah's own composition, a gauloised up translation of the dreamily romantic When I'm Here With You which in turn is taken from her quite marvelous debut solo album Sing Memory.
Both songs effortlessly evoke sun drenched afternoons cruising the Côte D'Azur in a sleek red Renault convertible, espadrilles, shades and Breton tops, and quite possibly an unscheduled pique-nique or two along the way.
Nixey's seductive enunciation is perfectly suited to the cedillas, circumflexes, fricatives, and lateral approximants of the language of love, and may well lead to a whole swathe of young people dropping media studies and taking up GCSE French again.
