Austrian black metal band Amestigon was formed by one-time Abigor singer/drummer Rune -- now calling himself Tharen -- and bassist/guitarist Thurisaz. Staunch defenders of the so-called "ancient way" of black metal popularized by the likes of Burzum and Darkthrone, Amestigon values raw guitars, furious rhythms, screamed vocals, ambient keyboard passages, and occasional folk music influences over the more gothic, orchestrated, and clean-singing refinements introduced into the genre in recent years. After making their debut in 1996 via a split EP with fellow countrymen Angizia, the group was silent for a spell before resurfacing in the year 2000 with the Remembering Ancient Origins mini-CD and new members Lanz (guitar/bass), Herr Wolf (guitar), and Silenius (vocals).
